The History of Halotherapy:
Halotherapy has been used for centuries across Europe and Asia as a natural way to improve respiratory and skin health. In the 1800s, a Polish physician, Dr. Feliks Boczkowski, observed that salt miners had fewer respiratory issues than their non-miner counterparts. His observations sparked the development of salt clinics deep inside salt mines, where people with asthma, bronchitis, and skin conditions could find relief in the mineral-rich air.
This ancient practice has since evolved into modern halotherapy, where advanced halogenerators recreate the microclimate of these healing salt caves in comfortable, spa-like environments.
At Defiance Therapeutic Massage & Wellness Center, we honor this tradition by offering salt therapy in a tranquil setting designed to nurture body and spirit.

Salt's Affect on the Body:
Halotherapy uses pharmaceutical-grade, micronized salt dispersed into the air by a medical-grade halogenerator. These salt particles are inhaled deeply into the lungs and also settle on the skin, where they get to work—naturally antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial. Salt’s ionic properties help loosen mucus, reduce swelling in the airways, and support the body’s natural detoxification process, making it an ideal complement to conventional care for chronic respiratory and skin conditions.
As clients inhale the fine salt particles in the air, they travel deep into the entire respiratory system, reaching even the tiniest bronchioles and alveoli.Once there, the dry salt begins to dissolve and draw out microscopic impurities, which is why halotherapy is often referred to as a natural “toothbrush for the lungs.”

The salt covering the floor of the Salt Room is mined from the Punjab region of Pakistan, which is home to a significant source of high-quality Himalayan salt, primarily extracted from the Khewra Salt Mine, which is considered the world's second-largest salt mine and a major contributor to Pakistan's annual salt production. -

No — Halotherapy isn’t meant to take the place of any medications or treatments prescribed by your doctor. But when used as a gentle, natural complement to your current care, many people do find it brings added support and relief.

The benefits of Halotherapy are best at a “warming heat” level of between 86-88 degrees F. It allows the expansion of the lungs and opens the pores on the skin, allowing halotherapy to be even more effective. At very high heat, sweat can block your skin pores, not allowing salt to penetrate. The HaloSauna is set to shut off when the temperature is manually set past 104 degrees ONLY during the salt delivery protocol. Salt therapy is more effective when you are not sweating profusely, and the temperature goes higher once the salt delivery has been completed).

Generally, we say the minimum age to use the sauna, unsupervised, is age 12. Younger children’s bodies don’t regulate temperatures as well and can overheat more easily than an adult’s. For children under 12, they should be supervised while in the sauna and limit their session to 20 minutes. Halotherapy is safe down to 12 months, and shorter sessions are recommended.

Your time in the Salt Room is yours — a chance to pause, breathe deeply, and simply be.
To support your relaxation (and the comfort of others sharing the space), we ask that you refrain from talking or using electronic devices during your session, although you are welcome to bring a book to read (no newspapers or Kindles, please!) Staying still and grounded helps the salt do its work, and creates a peaceful atmosphere where true rest can begin.
